ars poetica

by M.E. Walker

there must have been hundreds of them,
those Well-Meaning Adults,
stepping off their stiff-collared carousels
to eye my scraggly handwriting
and say:
“Make It Plain.”

later in early life, someone my age
whispers to my neck in a crowded lecture hall:
“i love the way each word looks:
    Wild.
like your hand is straining to keep pace
with a racing brain.”

so onward one crawls,
the knees both thesis and desk,
trying to Make It Wild,
striving to Make It Plain.
