Dear George

by Debbie Robson

Do you think perhaps we are all
hundreds of people that flare up
brilliantly for a moment and then
die over and over? I am not sure
who I am up to right now, but
in your letters of eighty years ago
I see a young man in the desert
trying to explain to a girl back home
what the fighting in the Middle East
is all about. I still wonder that now.
