Emily as Ecce Ancilla Domini by Dante Gabriel Rossetti

by Darren Demaree

Yellow matters. Blue matters
more. I offer a flower she doesn’t want
& if that’s all I can do

then red will never matter.
Good lord, white is a wrinkled mess.
Emily wants to become the bed.

I want her dark hair back.
Rooms are a trap. Blue matters.
I don’t want love. I want Emily to be

in a field. I want her on her toes.
I want the green to tease her.
I want to eat every bit of her fear.
