A writer’s manuscript is ultimately their heart. It should be treated with respect, and the author should have some control over the process. It’s their book. It’s their words. Every page should be treated with respect, held high, preserved for each and everyone that picks it up.
Perhaps that’s over idealistic, but it’s what the editor stands for in all aspects of life and what the press stands for as an extension of the editor.
We understand transparency can be construed as vulnerability or a sign of weakness in this day and age and send people running for the hills, but in all reality, doesn’t every writer want to be treated as a human being and not a manuscript?
We read BLIND. We will get a feel for who your are through your words, your stories and your voice. When we fall in love with your manuscript and find out who you are, we still won’t care about your pedigree. We will care most about you as not only a writer but a person. We believe in collaboration between writer and editor, person and person. We believe in words, what they have to say to the reader, to the world. We believe in transparency and accessibility. We feel publishing a collection should be an interactive and personalized experience. Every company has a vision. This is ELJ Publications. We are currently small and growing with a handful of dedicated authors, mostly emerging, with really awesome stories to tell. And, if we ever manage to become a large press, we will endeavor to keep this vision make sure everyone that works for the press keeps this vision close to their hearts.
If you agree with our vision, if you want a meaningful experience when publishing either your first book or twentieth, please consider us. We encourage you to purchase a title, hold it in your hands, speak with our current and forthcoming authors, learn more about the press and ask them about their experiences. We encourage you to write to the editor with questions at any time and expect a personal response. if you believe you can benefit from publishing with ELJ, then we encourage you to submit whatever you would like. We will support you 100%. We put in our sweat equity to treat your baby like our baby.
***PLEASE FEEL FREE TO QUERY US ABOUT ANY PROJECT***
When read for for free for both poetry and short-story collections. Response times will be varied, as Emerge Literary Journal and scissors & spackle are the priority August through February, but if we fall in love with your manuscript, please expect an extremely quick response. While we aim to publish as many emerging writers as we can, meaning the writer has never published a full-length collection before, with the addition of scissors & spackle under the ELJ Publications imprint, we are also looking for experienced writers and hybrid, experimental, edgy manuscripts. We want the red-headed stepchildren.
ELJ Publications prefers narrative prose and free verse poetry that explores human emotions, experiences, dreams, revelations, etc. We also veer towards the surreal with powerful images and language. If you feel that your poems and/or stories fit into any of these categories, please consider us.
In the query, send us a bit about yourself (without ever telling us your name or your publication history), why you write, what your project is and why you had it in your heart to write it. We care not about pedigree. We don’t want your resume or a list of awards. Be humble. Be real. That’s the kind of author we love.
Please send the entire manuscript up to 100 pages. For anything over 100 pages, please send first 20 pages only.
Please be prepared for personal responses. The editor is a real person, not someone sitting in an office with stacks of paper. Feel free to talk to one of our current authors to understand what I’m talking about.
Publication will be done through a print on demand publisher, book will be glossy and perfect bound. These mini-collections average 50 pages. You are responsible for obtaining your own cover art, though we are more than willing to search the public domain high and low to help you achieve your vision. We design several covers using the art you provide to personalize the collection. You are always welcome to design your own cover, if you have the means to do so. We will underwrite the cost assigning a custom ISBN and expanded distribution through markets like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Powells and the like.
We currently offer 10% royalties on the $12.00 retail price, which will be paid at the sell of 25 copies and every 25 copies there after (every 25 copies results in $30). The author will receive a 1099 at the end of the calendar year stipulating all royalties earned, which he/she will financially be obligated to report for tax purposes. We will also offer the author the ability to purchase deeply discounted copies and earn more money via book signings, readings and consignment. There is never an obligation to purchase copies. Every author will receive ten (10) copies of the collection at no cost to the author. There is never a minimum requirement of the number of copies an author must purchase. For every 30 copies an author does purchase, the next 30 will be reduced by $0.25 and another $0.25 for each additional 30 until a minimum of $2.50 is reached. ELJ incurs the sales tax and cost to ship the free copies for the first order only.
We require a signed contract upon acceptance that requests a two (2) year exclusive to the publication of the collection. That is to say, upon acceptance, the author will grant ELJ Publications two (2) years to recoup costs. The author may, at anytime, during the tow (2) years publish up to 50% of the collection, either individually or as part of a full-length collection or different collection that has a completely different title. Basically, we do not want you to publish your collection with us and the same exact collection with another publisher. Anyway, why would you want the same title with two different publishers in the first place? Please consider this prior to submitting.
We are not a vanity press. We take careful time and consideration with your manuscript, as we do this for the love of the written word. For an example of what we publish, please visit our Available Titles page.
